Able - exoskeleton for disability intercourse

Able - An device that assist intercourse for people with a lower body disability

"Able" is a simple, easy to use but powerful biomedical device designed specifically for people who are paralyzed from the waist down. The user only needs to put on the device to engage in their sexual activity without experiencing any discomfort.

This project is not about intercourse but intimacy. Relationships are not only about sex but also about love and care. After an accident, that results in a disability everything will be different, the relationship will be affected. Based on my research 25-30% of couples will get a divorce after this.

After getting disabled, it will be difficult to change sexual positions, for this they will need a partner, which might make them feel like an object.

"Able" helps you physically and mentally by giving you back control of your body. Accomplish satisfying intercourse and intimacy, could be a step to a better life.

Doing informative research is the foundation of a successful product. However, people are likely not preferred to talk about sex in public. Therefore, it is not easy to do research for this project. I started the research by interviewing different stakeholders namely, disabled couples, physical therapists, sex therapists, social workers, NGOs to develop a good understanding of the difficulties.

There are some exoskeleton systems currently helping users to walk or lift. They usually involve brushless DC motors and hub step servo motors which required bulky batteries. This device focus on smooth movements instead of powerful motion.

A lighter battery as a Lithium polymer battery will be a better choice to give more possibility for overall form. With a bondage course in Japan, I build a bondage study to ensure the design work safely while type up and hanging.

In my background research, I understand that disable would not like to use products with medical looks. Therefore, the device is designed with a natural curve. One of the difficulties is how to get the user's signal to process and react. There are EEG, EMG, and Flex Sensor. Using EMG and Flex sensors is easier to achieve natural control and improve the user experience.

This exoskeleton system allows users to move and turn their lower bodies to have sexual intercourse and change sexual positions. With the use of silent electronic motors that are non-obtrusive, the couple can enjoy being close to one another for hours and end. For pose changing, Intuitive design control.

Measure the small muscle movements of the immediate response and EMG signal, to magnify your starting position motion to change your whole body. By each practice, the user will be able to manage this exoskeleton step by step. For rhythm movement, measure the moving of the hip joint by the bend sensor and EMG signal.

The signal from the sensor will send to the PCB board. Then the motor will drive the elasticity wire band from slow to fast to control the hip joint and knee joint to create humping motion. For daily maintenance, this device will be able to wireless charging on the belt part. Keep in dry temperature and clean leather parts with a damp towel.

Currently, there are lots of tools for disabled people on the market to help with everyday tasks, for example, a grip to hold a cup or a hoist to lift them from a chair to a bed. Sex is a basic human need, but for disabled people, it has mostly been ignored. Sexual equipment for disabled people is still an untapped market.

For people with disabilities that have difficulty getting into the right position, the aid of a sex swing or a specialized chair can make things easier. The unique selling point of this exoskeleton has the benefit of not needing support while walking, this changes many variants and results in a slim, light, fashionable, and non-obtrusive design.

This is ideal while being in close contact with your partner and while wearing it on the naked body. Traditional functional medical devices do not have a good appearance, lowering the patient's self-esteem when wearing them. By giving it an aesthetic design would look like a piece of fashion.

For future development, there will be lots of opportunities, and with artificial intelligence helping, "Able" will develop a greater user experience, and the natural intuitive control system can become even smoother.

By analyzing user behavior date, "Able" will respond to user progress and learning from each of the variables over time. It will be improved together with the user, so it means it will become handier every time by each time they using it.

That user won't even notice they are using a device and merging with it like part of their body. And with the market growing, we can develop another version for different disabilities.
